lots of poverty folks coming in from poland, romania and the other deep eastern states. petty theft etc, but a dark street is not the safe place it used to be. people look ugy, dress ugly. looks like war time.


I was there for the first time last month. You're right, the city is ugly. It does feel like war. The people are stiff and steely, like something bad is on the way.

It felt reasonably safe to me, but of course I was in the more popular areas. However, after dinner one night, my son wanted to walk through the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which is a maze of concrete slabs, big, dark, and off the street. I said NFW. If there were a good place to mug a tourist, that is it.
