BHP Seeks Early Talks at Massive Chile Mine: Report
Published: Tuesday, 6 Oct 2009 | 7:37 PM ET

cnbc.com

BHP Billiton seeks early negotiations with Chilean workers at its massive Escondida copper mine, the world's largest, to avert a strike, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.

La Tercera citing mining sources said the company wants to avoid a stoppage similar to the 25-day strike in 2006 that hampered production and lifted world copper prices. Escondida's collective contract is due to expire on Dec. 5.

A steep recovery in world copper prices has emboldened mining workers demands for more benefits in contract negotiations. Copper prices have risen more than 90 percent so far this year.

The company declined to comment as well as union leaders contacted by Reuters.

BHP has a majority stake in Escondida, which produced 1.25 million tonnes of copper in 2008.

Workers at another BHP copper mine in Chile have threatened to strike because a new wage offer failed to meet their demands, they said. Spence mine workers could strike as early as Thursday, union officials said.
