The racial purists always seem to have a heck of a hard job of keeping the young ones from hopping the fence. When there were substantial barriers like oceans, mountains rivers and deserts, there was some long term separation, but even then, males will travel absurdly to meet their mate so deserts are no big deal, oceans a trifle. JFK wanted to send men to the Moon, not because it was difficult, or that he thought there was anything there, but because of a compulsion to have a very wide range to acquire females = it was just instinct.
