SYDNEY, Oct 7 (Reuters) - BHP Billiton Ltd/Plc said on Wednesday a mechanical failure at its giant Olympic Dam copper, gold and uranium mine in Australia had shut down an automated ore haulage system.

A secondary system was operating, but a company spokesman could not immediately say what impact the incident might have on production.

The main shaft haulage system supplies ore from underground to the surface processing facilities.
