Zinc spill under control

Queensland’s Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) is satisfied that there is no imminent danger to areas surrounding this week’s zinc spill from MMG’s Century Mine.

“No waterways or drainage areas have been impacted,” DERM northern regional services director Rob Lawrence told MINNIG DAILY.

“The company has constructed a barrier to contain the spill and have fenced off the area to prevent cattle from entering.”

DERM officers were sent to inspect the spill after the failure of a pipeline which carries mineral concentrates in slurry form from Century Mine to the company’s Karumba Port facility.

According to MMG, despite pumping being ceased upon detection of the fault, approximately 300 tonnes of zinc slurry, consisting of approximately 160 tonnes of zinc metal, was discharged into the area in the spill.

MMG shutdown mill operations at the mine immediately after the spill.

“DERM is satisfied that the mine has so far taken appropriate measures to mitigate the impact of the incident,” Lawrence said.

“We are now focussing on working with MMG Century to clean up the spill as quickly and effectively as possible.”
