Fair enough. But something's going on. They are pushing too hard, their stance keeps changing almost too easily... as if the only important goal is to get their hands on things no matter what.

I recall dealing with a certain contractor. He worked for us on a "cost plus" basis. In the course of the project, my wife, who is an accountant, kept finding errors in his bills. She would point them out to the guy, and every time he would apologize and correct the bill. The interesting fact was that every single one of those many mistakes was... in his favor.

Same thing with politicians. They are very willing to "err" - and every time you check, you'll find that they always "err" on the side of getting more power and influence.

A healthy political system should be able to contain these impulses.
