Upgrade, you mean downgrade. The best input I can offer is testing and validation. Dell's own design Optiplex systems using their own motherboard design has a better guard band than Intels. Dell has an
excellent simulation group, years of investment into a validation H/W and S/w lab which has a cache of troublesome boards and configurations that only the best systems could survive without a crash or hang. Thats why corporate customers buy Dell corporate boxes. A cheap no frills PC is ok, maybe for a mild user for home, but hang it on a network and running many combinations of hardware/software out there, and it will have a more difficult time of staying up or incompatibilities.Sure, over time you would think these issues should go away, but has congress made taxes less complex?no, only more complex. With competition and fast changing technology,
it makes transitions more difficult and issues will continue to come up. I would not go to a sub1K pc for some time yet, maybe never.

For what it is worth, my thoughts are that there are a lot of people out there using PCs at home that have a lot less capability than the Sub-$1,000 PCs. I think they will be a hit. We do not need all the power in 233, 266, etc. just to surf such places as 'techstocks'.
