"Democrat supporters point to the past where Republicans also pushed bills through with little transparency and scant time ahead of time before a vote is forced."

Beside, it's not really true. Name me any 1000 page bill that Republicans pushed through with little transparency and no bipartisan support, esp. one with as far reaching effects as health care "reform". They are talking about much smaller bills with bipartisan support.

Note: any time you see a political party in power explain that what they just did is not an egregious transgression against previous norms because the other party did it too, you can bet your paycheck that it IS an egregious - and novel - assault against political tradition. If it were merely normal 'politics ain't beanbag' stuff, the minority party wouldn't have any chance of making the charge carry any weight.

The Nazis did this all the time during their early years in power. Oh, everybody does this, they would explain, nothing to see here, move along. They said this as they replaced university administrations with Party hacks or opened concentration camps for their political opponents. Nothing to see here, quite normal, now shut up if you know what's good for you.
