you can be reasonable at times

I am always reasonable. I am eminently susceptible to reason. I just don't encounter it all that often. <g>

Libertarians are not especially Republicans or nutters although the ideology does have its share of both. Libertarianism spans the liberal/conservative continuum and both major parties as well as independents. It's at its root a perspective that focuses on maximizing individual liberty/choice as a framework for the commonweal. It's like a marriage between Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with public policy as a means toward fulfillment and vibrancy. Nothing unreasonable about that. That it sometimes coincides with more prosaic agendas does not discredit it.
