Hi Frank - New natural gas discoveries, accompanied by improvements in cost and efficiency of fracturing and injection have been a source of optimistic commentary.

However, fracturing and injection can require significant amounts of water and worse, may contaminate subsurface potable water forever.

We've discussed the "true cost" of what we do in earlier posts; for instance, what the price of products made at Love Canal would have been, had the environmental cost been added.

In sheer volume, the amount of newly-recoverable natural gas promised to allow the US +10 years of "breathing room" for transition to better energy economics and usage.

How much of that natural gas may truly be recoverable without unacceptable costs remains to be seen.
