NOVELL TO GET NEW WEAPONS IN BATTLE WITH WINDOWS NT ÿ By Mark Boslet PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--Novell Inc. (NOVL) is finally getting a new set of weapons in its battle with relentless foe Windows NT. Novonyx, a joint venture between Novell and Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP) anticipates shipping three of Netscape's popular Internet servers for use on NetWare 4.0 by the end of the year. NetWare is Novell's flagship network operating system, a product now locked in combat with Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Windows NT computer operating system. The three servers would enable customers to set up intranets, or corporate networks based on Internet standards, something that many corporations are anxious to do. Until now, NetWare customers have had to turn to operating systems, such as Windows NT, to host these intranets. Novonyx, in a press release posted on its Web site, said Netscape's FastTrack, Enterprise and Messaging servers would go to beta testing beginning next week. Novell's Ron Heinz, senior vice president of worldwide sales, said about 1,000 NetWare users have enrolled to be beta test customers and will be able to download the software. Thirty accounts have been selected for a closely monitored beta program, he said. Beta tests are held so that software can be debugged in advance of commercial release. The remaining pieces of Netscape's Suite Spot collection of Internet servers are to become commercially available between mid-1998 and the end of that year. Analysts have long hoped Novell would find compelling new reasons to stir interest in its NetWare product line, particular among its large base of customers using older versions of the product. The hope here is that the availability of Netscape's servers will encourage customers to upgrade to NetWare 4.0, analysts said.
