Much of it ends up getting wasted on "defensive medicine", on compliance with regulations and other nonsense.

My experience with the disc and spinal cord problems of earlier this year is an example of that....In Dec, after the initial x-rays, and the neurosurgeon who was called in ordered the MRI, he really knew what the problem was right away. But still, there were two more tests that were ordered by the hospitalists because of Medicare rules. They did one, and cancelled the third, as there was more than enough reason that surgery had to be done...

It is best not to have surgery coming in from Emergency, I was counseled. I believe that totally now. There was one more test/procedure that had to be done (cortizone shot directly into the area....the Doc that did that was excellent, but my surgeon was pretty sure that that wouldn't work....he hadn't told me that until later, so it was another thing that Medicare required....

Who makes the Medicare rules?

Congress. Like they have the answers to much of anything.
