Well we certainly are not a direct democracy, or even a "pure" representative democracy, since we do have constitutional and procedural limitations on government (diminished in practice perhaps, but they aren't gone).

But even if we where, we'd still be a republic. Which is why "not a democracy but a republic" doesn't make much sense to me, since even if you define democracy as having to be direct or very "pure", such a government would still be a republic.
