I see the medical and biological science base as part of the economy. Drug companies alone are 2.2% of GDP

If you see health care as a maintence function like law enforcement and fire protection, then there is only the agriculture component that really makes a contribution.

I don't see the drop off after age 50, but being in Silicon Valley there is a huge surivor bias to any experience I have.

The whole population doesn't drop off at 50, obviously, but a larger and larger fraction become less prodcutive as they age.
I'm well over 50, and I can too all right as long as I take a couple of naps, and people speak slowly.

I see health care leveraging and extending the large educational and experience investments.

Since the boomer generation will have to keep working, we should see if they can be productive over the next few years.

Japan has done much better than Europe with their directed research projects.
