I still have a visual recollection of Gerald Ford committing political suicide when he wondered off into a rambling confused argument during his debate with Jimmy Carter, claiming that the Polish people are, in fact, "free". Carter could hardly contain his happiness... he - and everyone else - knew at that moment that he was the next president.
