Some basic tips:

What should you do if you start to skid?

•Above all DO NOT PANIC!
•Look where you want your vehicle to go and steer in this direction.
•DO NOT BRAKE!
•DO NOT ACCELERATE!
•Disconnect the driving force on the drive wheels by doing either of the following
•If you're using automatic transmission, shift to neutral. However, if you cannot do that immediately, do not touch the transmission gear.
•If you're using manual transmission, declutch.

How should you brake on a slippery road?

If the emergency does not require slamming the brakes as hard as possible, squeeze braking (also known as threshold braking) along with declutching (manual shift) or shifting to neutral (automatic transmission) will do the job most efficiently.

Braking without anti-lock brakes

•Use the heel-and-toe method. Keep your heel on the floor and use your toes to press the brake pedal firmly just short of locking up the wheels.
•Release the pressure on the pedal, and press again in the same way.
•Repeat this until you come to a full stop.

Braking with anti-lock brakes

Also use heel-and-toe method, but do not remove your foot from the brake pedal until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

You steer against the skid and pump the brakes light and fast, except if you have ABS, in which case you press firmly for half a second and then let off. No panic at all. If the car spins, you hold the brakes, and let it go backwards straight. I drive four wheel, so no skid, but slight continuance when braking so you punch it out of 4 wheel to brake.

If there is enough snow bank you always have a drive-off cushion.

Most of the off the road stuff is in those light rear end, front wheel drive cars. A front wheel drive car drives best in mud or ice loss of control under light gas, light brake and steering straight where you want to go to pull out. Don't let your foot off the gas in front wheel drive if you skid. It even helps in a front wheel drive car to hit the brake (lightly) and the gas at the same time that you skid. This depends on the direction you skid. If you can't make the corner, you have to lighten your turn, and go around wide. If you oversteer and the read end spins out, you have to straighten your wheels, accelerate, and tap your brake.
