ST. LOUIS (Dow Jones)--The U.S. recession has exposed weaknesses in the data
and statistics that policymakers use to craft public policy, a top Treasury
Department official said Monday.

"The economic crisis has given an unintended stress test of our economic and
financial indicators," Treasury Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy Alan
Krueger said in a speech to the National Association for Business Economics
annual meeting.

Krueger said a key lesson from the meltdown of the last year will be to
improve the way statistics are produced to help avoid another crisis. The most
important data problem highlighted by the recent crisis: a near-complete lack
of information on a number of critical variables, Krueger said.

He pointed to a lack of detailed data on hedge fund positions, on the
interconnectedness of financial institutions and on mortgage refinancing
activity.
