In July I climbed a minor mountain (St. Patrick's Peak, in Montana) with two Americans and a Frenchman, and I liked all of them despite their political views, which I well knew from comments such as "The name of Bush shall never be spoken in this house," and so forth. (Actually, the Frenchman did not talk politics at all.)

I was with them almost a week, including the day we took to climb the mountain. Toward the end of our time together I told the woman "I don't think Bush is as bad as you say he is and I don't think Obama is as good as you say he is." This was the first they realized I didn't agree with them, unless they guessed from my lack of reaction to their badmouthing Bush and sometimes when I would get up and go wash dishes or something.

We are still good friends and they are great people to be in the woods with. It was a rather miserable climb, much of it through wet brush and deadfall and there wasn't a single word of complaint from any of us. Worth it, though. Gorgeous views.
