>>>The problem for Corel is the Microsoft Marketing Machine. It takes creativity in promotion, advertising, and mass communication, as well as quality products to begin to chip away at Microsoft's domination. <<<

MicroSoft's Domination for large corporations these days is to standardize on a single set of application to save time and money.
If your job is on the line who are you going to go with MSFT or Corel.
I guess the saying noone got fired for chosing IBM can now include MicroSoFT. Bell Canada recently converted all its applications to Microsoft.

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT) today announced that Battelle has deployed 6,000 copies of Microsoft(R) Office 97 companywide. Battelle recognized that by
adopting Office 97 as its company standard it would reduce its total cost of owning and administering productivity software. In addition, by implementing a custom toolkit built with Word 97 to speed
completion of standard documents, Battelle has saved 1,000 staff-hours per day that were previously spent managing communications.

Scott, interesting post. Thanks. In a couple of weeks I will weigh in again on the other thread and discuss some financials and prospects for the company. While I am utterly disgusted with the company, utter disgust is not am emotion I care to revisit on a daily basis. See you in a while.

Hi Scott. >> Here's a rather lengthy response of what I see that could possbily happen. Please correct or refute any mistaken idea. <<

Scott, your analysis IMO is "spot on". And the most striking statement you've made in it is, again IMO (and has been for a very long while):

>> But, Corel, like Novell, followed the Field of Dreams theme "if you build it, they will come." That of course did not happen, and will not happen if either company follows that same false notion. That theme can only work in the absence of competition. <<

This, in a nutshell summarizes the last 24 months or so for both companies.

The quandry they both find themselves in now, is extremely precarious.

Schmidt thinks he's going to pull it out for Novell, and Cowpland thinks he's going to do it for Corel.

The industry (as I see it every day), doesn't see any of this (and really hasn't). I was one of the "biggest supporters" of Novell prior to the CalPERS incident back in February of this year. Since then, after learning what I know now about the organization, the former management, etc., I just don't see it any longer.

I'm not as close to the Corel situation, but it's a mirror; I think I can safely say that.

Value play? Well, hell, "anything can fit that category" (including AC and Vegas <smile>). I dunno --- other than saying you make a very good post here that tells it like it is --- like it or not.

Best Regards,

Joe...
