Kissinger liked Haig and found him so helpful he ended up as his number one assistant. He was Haig's path to the top. What is astounding is the betrayal of Nixon by Melvin Laird, Nixon's friend and Secretary of Defense. It started when North Korea shot down one of our planes off the coast with 32 of our military aboard it. Nixon ordered Laird to send the 7th Fleet to the NK coast to get ready to bomb a NK airfield in retaliation. Found out a week later that Laird had never passed on the order. We ended up doing nothing and Nixon always blamed his troubles in Vietnam on that failure by him to respond. This is a short version, but the whole story is sickening. Nixon suffered all the way though office from subordinates who would not do what they were told to do, and he was too shy, in Haig's opinion, to confront them. This character flaw was what brought Nixon down.

He found Nixon to be extremely competent. Said the start of the Watergate mess came because he would not confront his people when it happened and fire them.

This is a capsule of what went on. Fascinating stuff.
