Beyond all that, even if there was a real manufacturing decline in the US, there isn't any good reason to think that import barriers would be very effective at stopping it.

Manufacturing jobs are being replaced in this country by other jobs, and arguably that is a good thing -- since the replacement jobs are generally higher-paying and more skilled jobs than manufacturing jobs.

Still, I do think there is some erosion of the traditional manufacturing jobs and I'm not sure it is good for the country to be without those.

But the key point is, as you said, that there is little you can do about it without creating problems somewhere along the line.
