Jean,

Investor-ex: How will the damage control team accomplish lifting the markets higher tomorrow?

nypostonline.com

I believe that any action that upsets the natural process of price discovery in a supposedly freely traded, open market is temporary in its effect at best and misguided at worst. However, in order to set and maintain policy, the Feds have a vested interest in smoothing the bumps, so I guess I can't blame them. The possibility that the intervention is covert is most troubling of all, leaving investors with undeserved confidence that any major trouble spot will be magically glossed over, which leads to even more reckless speculation. And then the cycle repeats, with greater amplitutde.

Nothing beats a good conspiracy theory. :)
