From the October 27, 1997 Issue of Electronic News Data Topics By Cynthia Bournellis and Bernard McAleer Quantum Corp. today released the Bigfoot TX series of hard disk drives with capacities of 4GB, 6GB, 8GB and 12GB, which began volume production on Sept. 30. The TX series has a larger recording area per disk than the Bigfoot CY series that debuted last year, and performs at 4000rpm due to faster seek times and data transfers. The Bigfoot TX 4.0 ($209); the 6.0 ($289); the 8.0 ($329), and the 12.0 ($399), feature MR heads, a PRML read channel and an Ultra ATA interface. Utilizing the 5.25-inch footprint, the drives have vertical heights of 0.8 inches (1-disk 4.0GB and 2-disk 6.0GB and 8.0GB) and mount in mass storage bays. The drives also feature a 128K buffer, an ID-less controller, 224-bit double-burst error correction on-the-fly, and support for the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) System. With higher-speed data-handling capabilities allowing more information storage within the long data tracks, the drives are intended especially for use with data-intensive applications such as video and multimedia, the company said. Emas and ADIC (Advanced Digital Information Corp.), two vendors in the tape storage business, formed an OEM relationship in order to expand their line of tape library products. By expanding the product lines, end-users and channel partners will benefit by having one source from which to buy products, said both companies. Emass makes high-end, mixed media libraries that can automate 100 to 788 cartridges. Adic's products include mid-range DLT tape libraries that automate two to four drives and up to 48 cartridge positions. Under the terms of the relationship, Emass will private label and sell Adic's Scalar series DLT libraries. Adic will offer a modified version of the Emass AML/S library that will be optimized for operation with DLT drives from Quantum Corp. In other storage news, TeraStor Corp. entered into a partnership with Mitsumi Electronics, Inc. for the manufacture of Near Field Recording drives. Under the agreement, Mitsumi will make the drives exclusively for TeraStor. A pilot manufacturing process is under way in San Jose, Calif., with plans to replicate the process in Cebu, Philippines, where volume production will commence. Silicon Gaming, Inc., a maker of video-based slot machines, chose the Viking Ultra SCSI 5.4GB hard disk drive from Quantum Corp. for use in its Odyssey series slot machines. The Odyssey machines, which are already in operation in the state of Nevada, are based on PC architecture and feature 32-bit graphics, live-action video and digital audio sound.
