Lula Offers to Cut Brazil’s Amazon Deforestation 80%, AFP Says

By Joshua Goodman

Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will offer to reduce deforestation in the country’s Amazon rain forest by 80 percent by 2020, AFP said.

Lula said the proposal, which would cut Brazil’s emissions of carbon dioxide gas by 4.8 billion tons, will be presented to world leaders at climate-change talks in Copenhagen in December, AFP said, citing Lula’s weekly radio address yesterday.

Brazil also plans to demand that developed nations pay their fair share for the costs of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
