Good ol' ceterus paribus, I remember it well from my short stint taking economics courses almost 30 years ago:

Yep, standard qualifier all around, particularly the social sciences. I was actually going for something slightly bolder but a bit hyperbolic as well. The assumption of a stable system tending toward equilibrium (Dems are in but the Reps benefit from that as soon as they get their electoral heads on straight) to advance the notion of an exogenous factor from outside the system. Unknown.

But then all this social science multiple syllables stuff is making my head ache. Heading out to Barnes and Nobles in a few moment.
