"BTW neither Gergen nor Borger are presented as conservatives" They're EX-conservatives. I think sometime in the Bush era, being a conservative just became too demanding. They didn't have the intellectual dishonesty to defend the ridiculous policies and propositions. To do so would have been embarrassing, as well. Maybe that's why they sound so reasonable to me. The craziness that's enveloped the conservative movement in this country makes it very difficult to figure out who is who.
