INTEL GUIDES DVD FOR PCs -- Intel today at the Intel/SPA DVD Developers
Conference set down the first guidelines claimed to help define the use of Media Control
Interface (MCI) commands and a plan to transition MCI-to-DirectShow development
including enhancing DVDs for PCs. These guidelines are slated to allow developers to
create a single version of a DVD title with the assurance that it will be compatible with all
PCs shipping with DVD technology. Intel: 408 356-8080.
IN-STAT: CABLE MODEMS AT $2.1B BY 2001 -- The cable modem market is
expected to grow from 171,000 units this year to over 10M units worldwide by 2001,
according to recent figures from In-Stat, the market research firm in Scottsdale, Ariz.
In-Stat forecasts revenues will grow from $79M to $2.1B. Influencing this growth is, of
course, the Internet. And, with all the entertainment capabilities being added to the
Internet, such as video, the Internet is becoming more bandwidth intensive, and simple
dial- up modems won't be able to be able to reasonably deliver data, said Gerry
Kaufhold, senior analyst for In- Stat's Multimedia Service. Although, the major market
for cable modems will be North America, Mr. Kaufhold said cable TV operators in
Western Europe, Japan, Asia, and Latin America will soon be delivering cable modem
services to their subscribers, as well. In-Stat: 520 363-9752.
