My Brit friend thames_sider likes to embarrass me by pointing out he is to my left.

I remember questioning a colleague at a talk he gave sometime in the late 80s about politics. I made some statements about my own politics as a preface. He interrupted me. Noted that my politics were to the right of some prominent British conservative at the moment. Forget just which. Certainly not Thatcher.

I was more than a little stunned. And doubly so because it was a fairly public occasion. I insisted that my friend make the case for that assertion since it didn't seem to be even close to being true. He did. And I learned.
