US: Lobby group opposes JBS expansion (REG)
8th October 2009
A US meat industry lobby group has called on state authorities to step in and block JBS's proposed acquisition of Pilgrim's Pride.

JBS-Friboi, based in Brazil, is Latin America’s largest beef processor.

The company has four divisions – food, cattle raising, transportation and hygiene and cleaning – but its primary business is in meat. The group is Brazil’s largest meat exporter, its products consumed in over 70 countries.

In May 2007, J&F Participações, the majority shareholder in JBS, bought US meat processing giant Swift & Co. for US$225m.

The acquisition of Swift looks set to give JBS access to the US market and opens its business to other markets in the Pacific region, including Australia.
