They needed to re-invent themselves, and they needed Michael's leadership to do it. Now let's see if he still has some magic. Jobs did, and it didn't take him all that long to reignite Apple.

'Dell's Extreme Makeover' Good timely post Scott. I'm currently prepping to move to Windows 7 from XP and decided to start the migration with a throwaway priced budget system and will move to a high end machine in a year or so when 7 matures. My new AMD powered Vista SP2 enabled Compaq is the 1st system I've ever bought in 23 years without an Intel processor and the 1st desktop I've bought since '96 (when I replaced a $3,400 486 Gateway) that I didn't buy as a high end custom build direct from from Dell. In the same period my former companies supplied me with 5 Dell Latitude laptops and docking stations on 2 year leases (with the original replacing an IBM Thinkpad). In that whole period and 5 desktops and 6 laptops (one of my own still in service) later, I have never had to have a component replaced in any Dell machine, and on several occasions Dell tech support has helped me resolve issues quickly and efficiently. That said, experienced local hardware techs I respect, unanimously acclaim Dell desktop systems just aren't what they once were from a reliability perspective. OTOH they still beat Apple Macs in the frequency of repair department, and Apple doesn't touch them in comparative initial cost or total cost of ownership. Acer coming on strong and Lenovo evidently makes a fine box. I'm now in the HP Compaq camp but I have my doubts about their product. Hopefully Michael will execute a positive Dell 'Makeover'. My next Win 7 purchase will likely (but not necessarily) be a high end custom tailored Dell. The whole ordering and configuration process from Dell's small business division remains top notch, and they always have a rotating good deal on the table for patient subscribers to their newsletter. I do have my doubts about the relatively new head of Dell's consumer division, Ron Garriques, an alum of the aeronautical engineering college of my alma mater. He ably assisted 'Fast Eddie' Zander in the destruction of Motorola's mobile devices division, an American tragedy that Dr. Sanjay Jha will have difficulty resurrecting. For anyone migrating to Win 7 from XP or Vista, I've just started a new SI board on the subject ... Subject 57865 ... and the 1st post after the header outlines my recent purchase and how I plan to commence the OS and apps migration.
