keith, all along kai has told us that demand in asian/japan is weak.
he's been sayng that for months. not just when the press started bally hooing it

I live in Singapore at the moment. Yes, they do sell the Presario 2200 Series here, and it's at an almost equivalent price (~$999).

In Asia, especially in the developing countries here, there is a huge potential market for low-end, cost effective PCs. Look at the China market with ~1.2 billion people, closely followed by India (~1.1 billion). Both markets will definitely go for cheap before they go for brands, or performance.

Then you have nations like Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, that are not solely price conscious. Japan is another key market - also not determined by price-point so much (mainly due to the fact that it's a highly sophisticated and firmly developed market already).
