And although the Nasdaq Composite Index closed about even for the week, biotechs were hit especially hard. At Friday's close, the NCI was up 37.09% CYTD, or Contest Year To Date, (vs. up 37.24% CYTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 10.95% CYTD (vs. up 16.47% CYTD a week ago) and the Contest median was up 12.65% CYTD (vs. up 21.23% CYTD a week ago). Unsurprisingly, RKRW's portfolio remained in the top spot with GENE's portfolio in the No. 2 position. Close behind, NIGEL's portfolio and GEORGIA's portfolio placed third & fourth. The week's closing CYTD percentages are: RKRW up 112.85%, GENE up 67.69%, NIGEL up 64.59% and GEORGIA up 64.29%. At Friday's close, 22 of the 32 Contest portfolios were in the black and 17 of the 32 were beating the NBI. Portfolio adjustments: Given the various buyouts throughout the year, including multiple buyouts in some portfolios, the reallocation of buyout cash has become quite complex. The reallocations are also likely to be less meaningful as we approach the end of the Contest year. So, unless contestants strongly object, my inclination is to end further reallocations and just leave cash from future buyouts in portfolios until the Contest is over. (If it's a really close call for first place and any of the contenders had buyouts after 10/23, I will check to see if reallocations would have changed the winner.) This week's portfolio adjustments are: 1) PPHM does 1-5 reverse split with temporary symbol change to PPHMD. 2) SEPR buyout at $23 per share. I reallocated cash using the 10/23/09 closing prices. Have a terrific weekend biotechies!
