Boy, isn't that the truth!! As far as kids are concerned, they LOVE Medals and certificates....We ask the teachers to have the kids do an extra credit essay on a given topic about American History....all over the US. Something like the Forts, or the Explorers, etc....

For each 5th through 8th grade classroom that participates, we have judges that judge the essays as far as how they followed directions, had researched some information, etc...and our own group gives a 1st,2nd, and 3rd place small money prize AND an engraved certificate for each child who even participated in the essay....

If their essay goes to National, they could win a large cash prize....The kids in the classroom LOVE to come get a certificate if they even entered....about half the class usually enters, IF we can get the teachers to support that effort.....

That is usually more of a problem, unfortunately. In WA State, we only have American History taught in the 5th graded, a tiny bit in the 8th grader civics portion, and then again in the 11th. Our essays are for the 5th-8th grades....so the common excuse from the majority of the teachers is they don't teach American History but only in the 5th grade. We HEAVILY support those teachers who make the effort!
