Unfortunately, it will take decades, perhaps generations, before the beetles eat their way to extinction. In a bit of fortunate news, there are some companies coming into Colorado to harvest these beetle killed trees. The lumber is still very much usable, for any number of needs. This will help to clear areas of kill, thus preventing further spread. The beetle apparently only has a range of some 10 feet. So, a clearing would starve these little pests out of food. I don't know how long the clearing needs to be dormant, but the plan is to replant in these areas.
