My theory and it's just that is that as you are fighting falling you are totally tensed up and that is when things break. Relax and let it go. I've taken some real whoppers back when I skied and never broke anything. Knocked myself half silly and had the wind knocked out of me to the point that I thought death was immanent but walked away. One rather stellar one going off a jump, showing off for a girl of course, looked so bad that by the time I stopped I had 2 ski patrol there within seconds to tend to the dead guy. They were actually rather surprised when I stood up to take inventory and appeared ok.

Oh, and no girl to be found once I regained my senses:-)
