They just haven't understood how out of step they are. The only question now is, WILL they be able to before some other party arises to take their place? How can they become more moderate and still keep their base crazies? I think they need to split into the Republican Party and the (movement) Conservative Party. I think a Powell-ish Republican Party could pull in many independents and probably some Dems. And the (movement) Conservative Party would be free to throw tea parties and howl at the moon all it wanted.... to no effect of course.
