The only time my brother and I didn't sit at the same table with the adults was the big holiday dinners. When everyone gathered in one home and the kids had our separate table. This was usually in the kitchen while the "big people" ate in the dining room. Holidays were the only time the dining room ever got used.

We did it that way at the big holiday family gatherings with grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins in the 1950s. I still remember the unique mixture of laughter that came from the adults in the dining room. It was a happy experience as best I remember.

We ate in the kitchen and the parents ate in the dining room.
