China might calculate the cost would be a cheap price to pay, especially if the result were to inflict permanent economic damage on an arch-rival that once was the world's sole superpower.

China's pain would probably be at least as large as ours. We'd pay higher interest rates, they would lose an enormous amount on their reserves, and then they would also have a harder time selling to the US in the future.
