There's certainly no reason we have to have an energy shock, as you have observed. Conservation, and more conservative energy consumption habits, will do much to mitigate the increased cost of alternatives (and thin availability). Time, for engineering improvements, social attitude adjustments (e.g. ok to have wind farms after all -- beats a cold house!), and infrastructure development can all help.

But that would all take leadership and vision and public accountability.

One way or the other, people will think about alternatives; but will it occur in such a way as to produce an economic shock (ala the oil embargo years) or will it be something we control as we become a more mature society?

History is on the side of remaining in denial and being hit by body blows from reality. Eventually.
