What about the FL panhandle/Orange Beach AL or across Mobile Bay? Fairhope area.

Geez, your stories make where I live seem totally safe and tranquil. I know the history is completely different, and I understand why in your situation owning guns makes sense, but ... there is absolutely no doubt that the tight restrictions on gun ownership in NZ is the main factor in our (relatively!) low rate of serious crime. Another major factor is the existence of social safety nets (socialism!) that limit the numbers of people with nothing to lose. Of course, there are other factors, e.g. there was never slavery here.

This is interesting, Prometheus.
I grew up in Mountain Brook -- in fact, in the Crestline area, just off of Country Club.

During the 1950s, when I was young, we never locked the doors of our house. I mean NEVER, not for months on end, whether we were there or not. If we went away in the summer, we might lock them -- or maybe not, if the cook or yardman were going to be there during the day. This changed by the late 1960s. The impetus for the change came from our cook of many decades, who was picking up on vibes my parents were oblivious to, and who started getting nervous about being in a house with all doors unlocked when nobody else was there with her. Then everything changed again. The house actually got broken into, probably by boys from a family who had moved in nearby. This family had a little money from somewhere but were in fact nothing more than jumped-up white trash.
The stuff you are telling us about sounds different and serious. Mountain Brook has plenty of money to use in the cause of defending themselves. I wonder if they have the balls -- they were always far too conformist, I thought, which I guess is why I am not there.

P1976,

Jeez, there are some pretty affluent, non-gated communities up here in gun-unfriendly, cold MA that would be appalled at your level of violence and do whatever necessary to stop it.

I can't imagine that happening at length anywhere in the state. Uh..except the ghettos, maybe. There, murder more than burglary.
