I almost moved to Portland. One thing to add to your observations - I saw more homeless there than anywhere but Santa Monica.

I'be been to Portland, Seattle, and surrounding areas and was struck by two things:

the scenery is beautiful - the trees, the green, driving around a corner and seeing a giant snow-capped mtn looming off in the distance.

the people are virtually all white. Sure there are a few Asians, Indians, an occassional black or hispanic - thinking about it, I can't recall seeing a single black or hispanic in Oregon anywhere. Which doesn't mean there are really none at all but OR is about as white as WV.

I guess its all a matter of perspective - what you're used to.

I looked it up: Portland 6.7% Asian, 6.6% black, hispanic 8.5% (they must hide the non-white folks well or they're very pale).

Houston blacks 24.3%, hispanic 41.7%, Asian 5.3%. Noticeable difference.
