so they purchased tons of calls on the currency, apparently.

Yes, some buy gold, including me. However, GLD does hold
mostly bullion, not the futures. There is a lot of disgust
around GLD in the buggy community, as these folks tend not
to trust anyone, which is correct - gold is the ultimate
financial disaster insurance. As such, it loses part of
its insurance appeal and picks up additional risk when someone
else holds it. Most of investment demand still comes
from the ETFs, not bar hoarders.

I have to say, it you want to sell a gold bar or gold coins,
it's more of a nuisance than just selling GLD. <g>
