His car cost way more than yours even in nominal terms (not sure how old yours is). It's likely a far better car, too, in terms of handling, braking, ride, power, etc. I think it might have been $22k? Maybe $24k. He got a lot of features he otherwise would have skipped, except poor saps like you and me foot the bill for $4500 of his total (i.e. clunker trade in).

I'm with you -- I'd rather the entire battery hybrid thing go away. Nobody uses Ni-Cads anymore by the way, the hybrids are Nickel-metal hydride, far superior. But manufacturing, life span, and disposal are serious issues.

I'd like to see that diesel technology really succeed. I don't like the crappy reliability nor the high price of VW autos, however, but whatever... I want to see an "ordinary" auto getting 40 MPG on the highway.
