Most of us here probably did the same thing...started working at an early age....I was babysitting at 12 years old....but then again, since I was the OLDEST sister (and they never let me forget it either...<ggg>) there was some experience involved...

The day after my 16th birthday, I went downtown with a friend and signed up to work at Greens Dime Store...Busy big store across from one of the large Department stores... Worked after school from 5-9 on Monday, and on Sat from 9:30-6....took the bus all the way home. Had to catch that bus by the Farmers Market, which was a bad place to be in those days (scary people nearby sometimes)...But there were other people around too catching the bus....Used to walk the 10 blocks home from the bus stop with a palm sized rock in my pocket. Luckily, the streets were well lit.

It was excellent training in all sorts of ways. I saved money, was able to spend some, and had my own little budget accounting all done from cash in envelopes for each item as I saved the money for whatever fund I thought necessary....
