Gus and Swamp Fox Keep in mind that you are dealing with someone still absorbing computers 101. I have copied many pages from the research site and I am glazing over. Could you be a little more specific as to which section would give me the best basic knowledge in understanding the components in a disk drive.

Now question #1: What is a thin film disk (magnetic film?) and how is it different from a disk drive coated in KM?

Question #2: What is the difference between an over layer of KM and an under layer of KM?

From IBM announcement "The data bits themselves are recorded onto a thin film of a ultra-low-noise, four component magnetic alloy film (THIS IS WAHT I THOUGHT KM WAS) that coats the aluminum disk. The alloy's (KM?) composition and fabrication conditions are designed for very high bit density and very low magnetic noise -- critical advantages in reading the tiny bits. Another thin thin coating of a hard material (KM? or what) protects the alloy from contact with the recording head."

As you can see I don't have a great understanding of how actually KM is different from other coatings? alloy? hard materials?

Give me a break I'm trying real hard to understand all this and then help!
