Thanks very much for that insight, Sid. You have a valid argument for Molten Carbide. I was in the mind set that the excess heat was due to innefficiency, which is true in the general sense. But the mere fact that PEM cells run cooler doesn't make them less viable, the fact that they are less efficient causes this, right?

There is one way that I, myself, and Amory Lovins of Rocky Mountain Institute have both suggested that could improve the economics of fuel cell vehicles. If a fuel cell vehicle is equipped with an inverter to convert from DC(produced by the fuel cell) to AC(used in the electric power grid) it could be plugged in and could feed electricity into the grid when the vehicle was not being driven. Selling electricity could help offset the cost of the vehicle. This could make fuel cell vehicles cost competitive at $1000/kw(typical capital cost of stationary electric generation) rather than at $70/kw(cost of power generated by internal combustion engines).

I have invested in both Ballard and ERC(partially because of your comments) and have done quite well on both stocks.

I work at Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University. We have developed PEM cell fuel vehicles which will use solar produced hydrogen. This is a technology demonstration project and we don't expect it to be cost competitive at this time.
