This excerpt was from an op-ed in today's NY Times. Amazing stat on the number of NBA players that go broke. Last I looked, even the guys on the bench are making over 5 mil a year...

John

"Perhaps this was a way for Stern to start to come to grips with the reported statistic that close to 60 percent of N.B.A. players ultimately go broke. Or to help rectify what a professional agent once told me: that some players, after suddenly coming into money and buying houses and cars for themselves and their family and their posse, were still so naïve about life that they had no idea there was something called income tax. Maybe Stern was actually embarrassed by the paucity of college graduates in the N.B.A., about 20 percent. But I should have known better."

"The criminal complaint against Walker says he received ten separate casino loans for $100,000. He has failed to pay back more than $800,000-worth of that money, lost gambling last year at Caesars, Planet Hollywood, and the Red Rock."

Meta-example of what kids shouldn't get involved with unless they know what they are doing?

Or, more simply, "same sh*t, different casino"?

Substitute "margin debt" for "casino loans" and "Schwab, Ameritrade and Fidelity" for "Caesars, etc.."

or...

"an adjustable rate mortgage" for "casino loans" and "San Bernadino, Pt. St. Lucie or <gasp> Phoenix"

"Walker was taken to the Douglas County Jail; his bail was set at $87,000.

He partied and gambled heavily in Las Vegas. And now, another sports figure finds himself in legal "foul trouble."

Tuesday afternoon, a Las Vegas judge issued an arrest warrant for ex-NBA star Antoine Walker. He's facing felony bad check charges for allegedly not paying back some enormous casino debts."

$87,000? No problem your honor. Who do I make the check out to?
