Ask most anyone from Europe what 'liberal' means and they will likely answer 'pro-Capitalist policies'.

Probably, but ask in the US, where they took the poll, and you won't get that answer. Answers in other countries aren't very relevant. Most Americans don't even know that meaning of liberal, and most that do know it, would reasonably except the pollster to mean what it normally means in the US, not "pro-capitalist".

Republicans show up poorly in polls because many see Republican politicians as having become corrupt, big spending, Washington insiders. And there is some truth in that view. That IMO is the primary reason for the huge gap between support for, or identification with "Republican", and support for or identification with "Conservative".
