Paul - there was a good comment on the news this morning regarding the Asian situation. The point was this - the US is much more integrated with Japan than SE Asia. Japan had a meltdown seven years ago and has been in a recession for seven years. How has growth been in the US over the past seven years?

The evidence that products like Intel microprocessors go to SE Asia only to be exported again, and that any reduction in their currency only means it's cheaper for them to export is apparently lost on the market in it's present mood. The perception is that it is bad, and perception is far more important than reality in the stock market. OTOH, one of the better ways to get rich in the stock market is to play when there are large gaps between perception of reality and reality itself. One must remember that this gap may persist for a long time- loook how long the belief in communism lasted despite ample evidence it didn't work.
