iF YOU DO THE ONLINE SCAN THEY DOWNLOAD AN ACTIVEX (i THINK)(PARDON THE CAPS) THAT LOADS THE VIRUS DEFS AND PERFORMS THE SCAN. i'VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT.

A possible workaround until you find the source could be setting up your own redirection via your host file after you check it to ensure the source problem is not a host file line. While not "curing" the problem, it might eliminate the effects of the problem.
