iF YOU DO THE ONLINE SCAN THEY DOWNLOAD AN ACTIVEX (i THINK)(PARDON THE CAPS) THAT LOADS THE VIRUS DEFS AND PERFORMS THE SCAN. i'VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT.

A possible workaround until you find the source could be setting up your own redirection via your host file after you check it to ensure the source problem is not a host file line.

While not "curing" the problem, it might eliminate the effects of the problem.

It will take a couple of days to get it done, but the best way to make sure you have done all you can do (short of format/reinstall) is to run go to one of the HiJackThis forums, install it, follow the directions on what to do, post the results there and let them guide you. Here's one of them.
